1 Year Olds

At Wesley Academy, we begin accepting students at 6 months old and provide an academic curriculum that intentionally builds the strong developmental foundation needed to excel as they progress into prekindergarten and beyond.  Wesley provides a low ratio of teacher to students in a Christian environment where your child can grow socially, emotionally, and academically.  We recognize that your child is an individual that it is our goal to personalize your family's experience in our school setting.  Our daily goal is to guide your child's development while partnering with you.  Generally, these are the developmental milestones we work towards:

Nine to Thirteen Months
  • Recognizes familiar words
  • Takes off clothing
  • Fits nesting boxes together
  • Waves goodbye
  • Crawls, scoots, creeps
  • Follows simple directions
  • Looks at a book
  • Remembers where familiar items are kept
  • Drops things into an open box
  • Scoops items
  • Begins to roll a ball
  • Babbles, mimicking speech
  • Tears paper
  • Copies simple gestures
  • Scribbles
  • Approximates simple words
Twelve to Nineteen Months
  • Plays simple pretend games
  • Puts items in and takes them out of a container
  • Uses one-word sentences
  • Plays simple musical instruments
  • Hands item to someone
  • Helps dress and undress self
  • Rolls a ball
  • Uses identification words correctly
  • Enjoys looking at a book
  • Retrieves ball that has rolled out of sight
  • Walks upstairs with help
  • Notes differences in temperature, smell, and taste
  • Attempts to sing a song
  • Enjoys messy play
  • Points at familiar objects
  • Hugs and kisses
  • Recognizes self in mirror
Eighteen to Twenty-Four Months
  • Throws a ball
  • Attempts walking up and down stairs
  • Shows a variety of emotions
  • Chews food
  • Zips and unzips
  • Points to several body parts
  • Walks on wide balance board
  • Rides a small riding toy
  • Enjoys nursery rhymes and songs
  • Says two-word sentences
  • Unwraps packages with help
  • Matches sounds to animals
  • Turns book pages one at a time
  • Enjoys water play
  • Sings words of a song
  • Attempts to jump in place
  • Repeats words you say
  • Works a simple puzzle
  • Strings large beads
  • Uses play dough
  • Uses finger paint
  • Holds pictures right side up
  • Uses words to tell what an object does
  • Recognizes self in pictures
