A Message from the Head of School

June 25, 2011Dear Wesley Community, I hope this letter finds you well. Wesley Academy is bustling this summer. Our Early Learning Center is filled with curious minds and growing bodies. New faculty members are settling in and getting to know our talented students by teaching enrichment classes. Prospective families are touring campus and making plans to meet their new buddy families. We are preparing to welcome you back in August. It is customary for our School to have an annual theme. In 2010-11, we focused on technology. I am pleased that our classrooms will allow for more engaging opportunities as a result of Wesley 2.O. The faculty has received new laptops, each Middle School student has a Netbook, and Lower School classrooms have gained sets of computers to enhance our young learners' lessons and fluency with technology. Additionally, we have created new classes that merge Fine Arts and Technology as a way to create limitless possibilities for our students. As a result of your generosity and the Schools determination to prepare students with tools that will make them more successful for their next steps, we made a dent in our technological advancements. There are plans to acquire more technology, tools that will aid us in supporting our digital natives for the world that they will leave lasting marks upon.The fine and eager faculty members of Wesley have been patient with me, for they were well aware that a new theme was brewing. Our teachers are enjoying the summer in grand ways; volunteering, writing curriculum, teaching Vacation Bible School, traveling the world, visiting family, and continuing their mission of being lifelong learners by pursuing personal and professional interests. Despite their disparate paths, they are all missing your children. Amidst their busy yet rejuvenating summer, they frequently contact me to inquire the theme for the year. I have had numerous conversations and reflected upon all that I have seen since my appointment this past February, and there was a resounding theme. It was present in the hallways, reflected in the faces of the children, and strewn in the atrium of the church. This sentiment was omnipresent, and I want Wesley students to serve it to the greater community. The theme for the 2011-12 school year is simple, yet powerful in its multiple meanings - WE BELONG. The warm and wonderful reception that I have received from each of you, coupled with the observation of children whose demeanor is always free and inquisitive while in the presence of their loving teachers reiterates that each of us truly believes that WE BELONG here. The diversity of people, the multitude of faiths and creeds, the differences of opinion that are heard and respected all resound with a chorus that proclaims that Wesley feels like home. A beautiful letter from 1 Corinthians 12:20 reminds us, There are many parts, but one body." Though our talents may vary, our strengths complement each other and provide a community for our children to thrive in. Similarly, one of my favorite proverbs acknowledges that It takes a village to raise a child. Each parent, faculty member, and friend of Wesley Academy is integral in the success and citizenship of our students. WE BELONG.Please receive this letter as an invitation to join in the theme and aforementioned movement for the 2011-12 school year . Join us for chapel. There are a host of wonderful topics and speakers that will remind us and our children that WE BELONG to the greater community and that we are responsible for taking care of others. Additionally, a host of service initiatives have been planned for our students. It is my hope that Wesley students will be nurtured by many, including their loving parents, sage teachers, and a host of others that make up their greater community. We are all their teachers. You, parents, were the first to share the gifts of fine character, faith, and knowledge with your children. Thank you for entrusting us to partner with you in modeling and reinforcing these virtues. Included, you will find a host of information. Please peruse and begin to think about ways that your family can strengthen its sense of belonging to Wesley Academy. Consider being a more active member of the PTO, welcoming a new family, giving to the annual fund, attending a Parent Education class, or making time to attend a school event. I conclude with a line from a wise and wonderful friend who models daily what it means to be a part of a community, "I belong to you, and you belong to me." Wesley Academy is nestled in the dynamic Westchase business district of Houston, Texas at the corner of Beltway 8 and Westpark Drive. Wesley is a Christian, coeducational, independent school for children as young as six months old through Grade 8. The school is associated with the First Methodist Church of Houston and is located on its Westchase campus.

Wesley takes pride in what it has been able to accomplish in its short 15 year history. After much planning, the school opened in August 1995, enrolling thirty-one children, ages three through the first grade. The church facilities were soon outgrown; portable buildings had to be added to accommodate the school’s growing enrollment. Today, the school is grounded on a twenty-four acre with handsome facilities that include a gymnasium, soccer fields, and two swimming pools. These treasures are available to our students for physical education and athletics.

Wesley Academy is nestled between it’s founding body, First Methodist Houston Westchase, and Quillian Recreation Center, another ministry of the church that provides after school care for our students.

We use School and Student Services (SSS) to process financial aid applications. Based on the financial information you provide in the Parents' Financial Statement, SSS gives us an estimated amount your family can contribute to educational expenses. Please be aware that Wesley Academy does not offer 100% financial aid. Do not assume that Wesley Academy will cover the difference between what you can pay (per SSS) and the amount of your scheduled tuition. To begin your financial aid application for the 2011-12 school year, please follow these steps below. (You only have to complete one Parents' Financial Statement, even if you have several children applying.)TO COMPLETE THE PARENTS' FINANCIAL STATEMENT (PFS) ONLINE1. Go to sss.nais.org/parents.2. Click on the "Apply Now" button.3. You will set up a PFS Online account using your e-mail address and a password. Returning parents: If you completed an online PFS application last year, use your e-mail address and existing password. If you have forgotten your password, click on "Forgot my password". 4. Yes! Faculty and staff are on campus to care for students before school as early as 7:00am. After school care is provided for ELC students on campus, while LS and MS students may register with Quillian to stay on site until 6:30pm. Additional charges apply.

Early Learning Center

The Early Learning Center at Wesley Academy is a faith centered and academically based program for children ages 6 months old until 4 years of age. We are dynamic in our teaching strategies in order to accommodate the individual needs of the children we serve. Our small class sizes allow specialized attention to all students and create a sense of home away from home. We are proud to be a part of First United Methodist Church of Houston-Westchase.CharacterFrom a simple smile or handshake in the morning to a hug good bye, our teachers and staff model good character. We use kind words and practice good manners to show our students how to demonstrate good character.FaithWe are grounded in the word of God and offer many opportunities to our students to develop and strengthen their relationship with Jesus. We lead by example and encourage children to pray and thank God for their many blessings. Students ages 2 years and up attend a weekly chapel.KnowledgeOur curriculum is multi-dimensional geared toward the development of the whole child. We incorporate daily devotionals, math, science, reading, pre-writing, language arts, and social studies. Your child will be challenged to grow here at Wesley.

Lower School

The Lower School curriculum provides students with a solid educational foundation created by carefully planned instructional goals and objectives. Essential learning skills, cooperative social behavior, appreciation of the arts, good study habits, and physical coordination are progressively developed for each grade level. The program stresses English language arts including reading and writing. Students advance at a pace that supports their development and builds sound fundamentals in mathematics and social and natural sciences. The curriculum is balanced with special classes including: music, art, Spanish, Christian education, health, library, and physical education. Technology is integrated in each classroom.

Middle School

Wesley Academy Middle School is a comfortable learning environment specially attuned to the needs, interests, and abilities of young adults. The curriculum constitutes a rich diversity of classroom experiences that provide sound foundations for academic accomplishments. Classes are departmentalized and students follow individual schedules. These young men and women are encouraged to undertake advanced explorations into mathematics and the sciences. Language Arts students are introduced to the wondrous diversity of creative expression found in literature, poetry, story telling, and creative writing. The middle school learning experience is further broadened and deepened through Christian education, study skills, physical education, Spanish and music. 21st Century Learning tools and technology enhance our students' learning.

Dear Wesley Community,Our first full week of school has been just that - full! There area host of great things happening on campus, in the classrooms,and behind the scenes.Welcome, new Wranglers!There are some new faces on campus that will be serving youand your family. I hope that you have all met your children'stalented teachers by now, and I invite you to meet a few newadministrators.Paula Rivera, Director of Finance, was hired by First Methodist this summer. She will be on Wesley's campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Feel free to contact her any day of the week to get your financial questions answered. It provides unrestricted funds that directly support the operating budget. The Wesley Academy Annual Fund benefits every student every year by bridging the gap between tuition revenue and the actual cost of providing a Wesley education. Q: Where Do the Wesley Academy Annual Fund Dollars go?All contributions to the Wesley Academy Annual Fund go directly into the current school years budget, so your contribution helps fund everything that happens at Wesley. Contributions to the Wesley Academy Annual Fund support: • Our talented and dedicated faculty• An enriched student life program • A full-spectrum athletic program • Advanced technology•An exceptional campus and facilities• A culture rich in traditionQ:Doesn't tuition cover the cost of these expenses?The cost of a Wesley education is significant, but tuition alone does not cover the entire cost to educate a Wesley student. Thus, every student actually receives a subsidy made possible through annual giving to the Wesley Academy Annual Fund. Q:Who gives to the Wesley Academy Annual Fund?Alumni, parents, trustees, faculty, staff, grandparents, parents of alumni, board, foundations, corporations and friends.Q: How much should I give?We ask each person to participate at a level appropriate for his or her circumstances. Gifts at all levels are vital to the success of the Wesley Academy Annual Fund and are appreciated. I Want to participate, but do small gifts really matter? They really do! In fact, more than a quarter of the gifts made to the Wesley Academy Annual Fund are gifts of $100 or less. Last year, these gifts accounted for approximately $227,000 of the total amount raised.Furthermore, participation in the Wesley Academy Annual Fund indicates overall support of the school, which is extremely important to outside funding sources, such as foundations. For example, when considering whether to award a grant to Wesley, a foundation will ask about participation percentages from alumni, parents, faculty, and trustees.
